I have a Coolsat 6100 that I got got from a garage sale. This and a buddy's old dish should get me up and running, right?

What is the difference between a "Bin" and a "key"...I can prob guess, but I want to be sure. Why are "Bin"s in the form of a file while "keys" (that I've found anyway are text...I'd sure like to upload these via USB if they are needed as badly as a quick google search would suggest.

This box hasnt been used in awhile so after reading a few posts on other sites I am assuming some sort of firmware update must be made???
